At 1 December 2011, from 20.00 untill 22.00 o’clock,  Timothy Radcliffe (1945) – dominican and professor emiritus Theology at Oxford Unversity – will present the Edward Schillebeeckx Lecture (in English). The lecture is organised by the Soeterbeeckx Programme, and will take place in the Auditorium of the Radboud Universy Nijmegen. We’re very sorry to announce the cancellation of the master class of professor Mary-Catherine Hilkert, which was planned for this May. Due to a minor accident, professor Hilkert is currently not able to visit Nijmegen. Hopefully, we’ll find some opportunity to reschedule the classes later this year. We wish Hilkert a soon recovery.

Professor Mary-Catherine Hilkert of Notre Dame University, USA, will visit the Radboud University Nijmegen at the end of May 2012 to give a Masterclass on Edward Schillebeeckx’s Political Theology. Professor Hilkert is a renowned expert in Schillebeeckx’s thinking. Last year, she gave a very successful series of lectures in Nijmegen as well.

The full title of this year’s Master class is: Speaking of Salvation in a Secularized and Suffering World: Edward Schillebeeckx’s Social-Political Theology of Grace. The Masterclass will take two-and-a-half days of in-depth reading and discussion. Language will be English.

The Master class will start in the evening of Thursday, May 26, continuing the whole day on Friday, May 27, and Monday, May 30, 2011. Dr. Stephan van Erp of the Faculty of Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies will give a preparatory lecture to this Master class on Wednesday evening, May 11.

The National Catholic Reporter recently published an interesting article on Schillebeeckx,  written by prof. Hilkert. It is titled ‘Edward Schillebeeckx: A herald of God among us. Theologian identified God in the powers of endurance, resistance and hope.’

“That baby is God.” When asked about his first conscious memory of Jesus, the Flemish theologian Edward Schillebeeckx, who died in 2009 just before Christmas, recalled those words of his father as he pointed to the infant Jesus in the large Christmas crib in their home. Schillebeeckx, who helped to revitalize interest in Jesus and to reshape the study of Christology in the second half of the 20th century, related the family story to an Italian journalist in 1982 on the occasion of his reception of the Erasmus Prize for contributions to European culture. He was the first theologian ever to be so honored. If the graduate students at the University of Notre Dame are any indication, Schillebeeckx’s legacy continues. Read more.
