‘Tijdschrift voor Geestelijk Leven’ (TGL) has published a special issue on the meaning of Schillebeeckx theology for spirituality. This issue had been discussed on a colloquium on January 17 in Antwerp.

On january 14 ‘Kerk+Leven’, the weekly news from the archbishopric Mechelen-Brussels, published an article on Edward Schillebeeckx. Occasion was the publication of a special issue on the meaning of Schillebeeckx’ theology for spirituality (by TGL).

“Hoogbejaard worden heeft als neveneffect dat je nog bij leven tot de geschiedenis gaat behoren en dat je mensen hoort zich afvragen wat er van je werk blijvend is.”

“Schillebeeckx is nog altijd interessant, omdat hij net breekt met een fundamentele moderne vooronderstelling. Hij gaat op goede gronden in tegen ons moderne wereldbeeld. God heeft toekomst niet omdat mensen het geloof voor de toekomst weten door te geven, maar omdat God zelf toekomst geeft en mensen toekomst gunt.” [Erik Borgman]

“Het gaat er volgens de Nederlandse prof [Erik Borgman] bij Schillebeeckx niet om hoe het christelijke geloof te verzoenen valt met de moderniteit. “Van Schillebeeckx leerde ik de omgekeerde vraag te stellen. Hoe is de moderne tijd door God getekend?”. Borgman vindt dan ook dat we Schillebeeckx ook in de eenentwintigste eeuw moeten blijven lezen, “omdat hij ons kan helpen onze wereld opnieuw te zien als een plaats van Gods aanwezigheid”.”

“Wie zou zich kunnen inbeelden dat de vele geleerde boeken werden geschreven door een man die nu zijn breekbaarheid beseft en dankbaar is om de kleinste gaven die hem te beurt vallen: een omhelzing, een warme hand, een kruisje …?” [pater Vaganée]

‘Soeterbeeck Programma’ (Radboud University Nijmegen) organises this May a symposium on the theology of Edward Schillebeeckx. Scientists will search for important questions in the fields of economics, health care and spirituality, partly from the perspective of Schillebeeckx’ theology.

Speakers: prof.dr. Ben Vedder, dr. Stephan van Erp, prof.dr. Erik Borgman, Jonas Staal, dr. Annelies van Heijst, prof.dr. Frans Maas, drs. Hanneke van Laarhoven and dr. Erica Meijers.

TGL (Tijdschrift voor Geestelijk Leven) 2009/1 will be an extra large issue on the meaning Edward Schillebeeckx had for the development of spirituality in the last decennia. The issue will explore on the theological horizon as Edward Schillebeeckx draw it, looking for renewed impulses for churchly and spiritual life in the coming time. Could this theologian still inspire today?

We will discuss on this issues on a meet- and studymorning on Saturday Januari 17 from 9h30 untill 12h00 at the Hof van Liere, Prinsstraat 13, 2000 Antwerp (Belgium). The discussion will be held by people who co-oporated on the issue and by some critical sympatizers: Erik Borgman, Jo De Tavernier, Mia Verheyen and Bert Claerhout.

In the last period the Edward Schillebeeckx Foundation undertook several activities regarding the thinking of her namegiver. In that way it seeks to safeguard for the future the theology of Edward Schillebeeckx and to make it public in a broad sense.

The renewed website is a good example of this effort. The project Collected Works makes this intention visible a well: the most fundamental works of Edward Schillebeeckx will be republished, in an improved translation, in a English collected edition. Another activity is the evaluation of the period of Robert Schreiter and the appointment of a new professor on the chair ‘Theology and Culture by the Edward Schillebeeckx Foundation.

Since half november you can find this new website of the Edward Schillebeeckx Foundation online. It was designed by Frank Schrijvers from ArtError Webdesign. The original website was outdated. The content needed to be renewed for a long time. And the design could use some transformation as well. The Foundation had a new address as well: www.schillebeeckx.nl.

The Foundation is very satisfied with the result. “We now have a design that shows that we are a present-day Foundation. We are still now putting effort in the thinking of the great theologian Edward Schillebeeckx.  With a new look and a new content,” according to the official secretary.

The next months we will be working even more on the renewing of the content, amongst others by adding video and audiofiles to the website. From now on the Foundation will also give up-to-date information about her activities. By means of news reports we inform you about the recent matters: about the Foundation in general, but especially about current affairs and activities. News on the changes regarding the chair ‘Theology and Culture’ and the publications in the project Collected Works Edward Schillebeeckx.
