Hilkert on Schillebeeckx

The National Catholic Reporter recently published an interesting article on Schillebeeckx,  written by prof. Hilkert. It is titled ‘Edward Schillebeeckx: A herald of God among us. Theologian identified God in the powers of endurance, resistance and hope.’

“That baby is God.” When asked about his first conscious memory of Jesus, the Flemish theologian Edward Schillebeeckx, who died in 2009 just before Christmas, recalled those words of his father as he pointed to the infant Jesus in the large Christmas crib in their home. Schillebeeckx, who helped to revitalize interest in Jesus and to reshape the study of Christology in the second half of the 20th century, related the family story to an Italian journalist in 1982 on the occasion of his reception of the Erasmus Prize for contributions to European culture. He was the first theologian ever to be so honored. If the graduate students at the University of Notre Dame are any indication, Schillebeeckx’s legacy continues. Read more.

In rememberance: Edward Schillebeeckx

At the 23th of december 2009 our name giver passed away. We remember him with warm feelings. We remember the things he wrote and said.

It was pleasant to visit Edward. Sometimes conversation were theological. But more often Edward was just interested, as a truly involved human. We remember the softness and kindness he treated each of us with.

We remember Edward. Again and again, in the work that the Edward Schillebeeckx Foundation does, carrying his name. And we are grateful. For his theological legacy, which the Foundation tries to cherish and carry out as good as possible. But above all, we thank Edward for his human-ness, that he was willing to share with us. Dear Edward, rest in peace.

Schillebeeckx symposium Münster

In the context of the Theological Congress for Dominicans in Europe, there is organised in Münster (Germany) a Schillebeeckx Symposium at the 9th, 10th and 11th of December. The title: ‘In memoriam Edward Schillebeeckx OP (1914-2009). Impulses for Theologies in the 21st Century’. Here you find the general informatie and the program.

Schillebeeckx’ 96th birthday

At november the 12th 2010 we honoured our namegiver. Edward Schillebeeckx would have turned 96 jaar today. We are moved by the fact that Edward isn’t amongst us anymore. We remember the special personal moments we had with him. And we are grateful for the way he contributed to church and theology, to the happiness of many inside and outside the church. Despite his death we honour a good tradition. The enormous bouquet of roses, the way we tried to show our appreciation, indeed colored the house which was so valuable to Edward.

Secondary literature

Drs. T. Schoof undertook again the trouble to update the bibliography of secondary literature about Edward Schillebeeckx. The changes are collected in a seperate document as well. The Foundation is drs. T. Schoof grateful for all the work he did.
